The volcanic archipelago of Fernando de Noronha is a great destination for divers and surfers.

One side of the main island is exposed to the Atlantic, creating the powerful surf which has earned the island its nickname, ‘the Hawaii of the Atlantic'. Divers should head for the protected side of the island, where the calm seas from April to November give perfect diving conditions. Spinner dolphins, turtles, juvenile sharks and stingrays can be seen in the bright blue waters, and there are plenty of shipwrecks littered on the bottom of the ocean. The island itself is full of tropical plants and has a long history from its time as a pirate lair to Portuguese naval base and even a federal prison. Now it's a place of calm, a fantastic place to stay for surfers and divers, or even for those who just want to chill out on a beautiful island, lounging on the beaches and swimming in the sea.
