ecuador the cloudforest: mindo region
The region of Mindo is within the protected Mindo-Nambillo forest, a scenic two-hour drive to the northwest of Quito.
The cloudforest is home to an array of diverse flora and fauna; a visit here is a must for nature-lovers who aren't going to the Amazon. Deer, armadillos and pumas roam amongst the trees, while hummingbirds and butterflies flutter through the mist. This diverse ecosystem has a unique range of plants: orchids, bromeliads, heliconias, ferns, vines, moss and lichen grow here in abundance.
Wander along the paths beside crystalline rivers and waterfalls with an experienced guide to make the most of your opportunity to view rare wildlife. Walk through clouds of butterflies at Bellavista, and enjoy a cup of coffee in the company of hundreds of hummingbirds at a local hacienda. The rolling mist that gathers between the trees gives the forest a pervasive aura of mystery and a feeling of peace and serenity away from the hectic modern world. Sachatamia Lodge
