peru puno and lake titicaca
With shimmering, bright blue water and sunsets that unfold in stunning flares of pink and yellow, Titicaca is the world's highest navigable lake at nearly 4000m above sea level. Situated on the shore of the great lake, Puno is known as the ‘folklore capital' of South America and the birthplace of the Inca Empire, according to legend.
Lake Titicaca itself is an incredible site to behold at nearly 200km in length, but there are numerous activities and excursions in the area. These include short trips such as rowing around tranquil patches of reeds, wildlife viewing visits to local wetlands and hiking in nearby mountains. There are also many local attractions, from the beautiful Titilaka stone arch to the amazing Uros Islands; these are man-made islands entirely hand-woven from reeds, and home to the native Uros people. With a large Quechua and Aymara Amerindian population, Puno also holds many folk festivals and fiestas throughout the year.
One of the most famous attractions in Peru (and it has many), Lake Titicaca is a must-visit destination for any traveller; an awesome display of the beauty of nature that you'll never forget. Inkaterra, Titilaka Lodge *****
