If you are visiting Sofia and wish to spice up your stay with a little history and outdoor fun, our ‘Boyana Church for Hikers’ day tour is the ideal day tour.
Located on the outskirts of Sofia, at the northern slopes of Vitosha Mountain, Boyana Church is one of the most significant historical landmarks in Bulgaria. It is also among the country’s first entries in the list of UNESCO World Heritage. Let us take you on journey through time and tell you the story of what makes this small church so special. We will discuss the significance of its 13-th century frescoes and why it is considered a masterpiece of Christian Orthodox Art.

The day continues with a hike though Vitosha Nature Park’s rich and lush beech forests. Our goal is to reach the 25 m high beautiful Boyana Waterfall. It is located at 1330 m altitude and the route we take will depend entirely on your preference and level of fitness.
We offer an easy, a moderate and a challenging option. Get in touch if you are unsure, what would best suite you.
* We operate this tour all year round, however, it is subject to weather conditions. Particularly in winter, in case of extensive snow cover, we provide snow-shoes to participants.

We depart at 9:00 AM from a location of your choosing in Sofia
On this Sofia day tour we set off at 9:00 AM from a location of your choosing in Sofia for Boyana Church, at the outskirts of town.
As a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Boyana Church is subject to entrance restrictions, aimed to preserve its priceless frescoes in the best possible condition. Therefore, only small groups are allowed one at a time and we are given about 10-15 min inside.
After our visit to the church, we head into the rich forests of Vitosha Mountain, where our hike to Boyana Waterfall begins. Our traditional route is circular and of moderate difficulty. However, if you feel a bit more adventurous, we can present you with a more challenging approach. And if you prefer a more easy-going and relaxed walk through the woods, that can be arranged too with our easy trail option. We will tailor the hike entirely to your preference.
Once we reach Boyana Waterfall we will have ample time to enjoy the view, take pictures and sit down for a picnic lunch (or lunch pack) with hand-picked Bulgarian delicacies.
The hiking trail back to our starting point is quite pleasant and relaxing.
You can expect to arrive back in Sofia in the afternoon.
