A comprehensive Plovdiv Sightseeing Tour for every taste

“Ancient and eternal” is the motto of Plovdiv – the oldest living city on the European continent and 2019 European Capital of Culture. That is not surprising, given its more than 8000-year-old history.

On this private Plovdiv walking tour, we will deep-dive into the city’s ancient history. For millennia this place has been a cultural and commercial center of different civilizations. Layers upon layers of history are hidden throughout its streets. We go all the way back to Plovdiv’s origin in Thracian and Roman times, visiting several landmarks along the way, including the spectacular Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis. Moreover, we focus extensively on Bulgaria’s Revival Era architecture and way of life, as well as our Ottoman heritage.

Plovdiv – Bulgaria’s Capital of Culture and Art

Plovdiv impresses not only with its fascinating past, but also with its more modern outlook. Our sightseeing tour explores at length the city’s Kapana District and its significance as an art and culture hub. Along the way, we encounter some spectacular street art and get a taste of the local food scene.

Our Discover Plovdiv sightseeing tour is the perfect way for guests to get to know the city, helping you gain a better understanding of the complexity of Bulgarian history and culture. That being said, if you have any questions about this Plovdiv daytrip from Sofia, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Otherwise, keep scrolling to find more details below.

Plovdiv Daytrip Itinerary

On this excursion from Sofia, we set off at 8:00 AM from a location of your choosing and head to the city of Plovdiv. The drive takes about 1.5 hours.

Our comprehensive sightseeing tour of Plovdiv begins with a walk through the Old Town. Here we revisit the ancient history of Plovdiv and its Thracian and Roman past. We will explore in particular the remains of the fortress on Nebet Tete, as well as the Roman theater and stadium. We will further discuss Bulgarians’ way of life during Ottoman rule and visit the Orthodox Christian ‘St. St. Constantine and Helena’ Church, the local Dzhumaja mosque, and the beautiful 19-th century Hindilyan House – a splendid example of Revival Era architecture in Bulgaria.

After our lunch break in Kapana District we will stroll down the longest pedestrian strip in Europe to our two final stops. These are the antique villa Eirene and the Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis – the highlights of the tour and some if the best preserved Roman mosaics on the Balkans.

You can expect to arrive back in Sofia in the early evening.
