Where history meets wilderness: an immersive rural and hiking journey

Discover a side of Bulgaria where legends echo through ancient mountains, where sacred monasteries cling to forested slopes, and where village life continues much as it did centuries ago. This 11-day journey from the majestic Rila Mountains to the rolling green Rhodopes invites you to experience the country’s most magical landscapes—places shaped by Thracian kings, medieval monks, and generations of proud mountain people.

Along the way, you’ll uncover UNESCO treasures like the Rila Monastery and Boyana Church, wander through charming stone-built villages, and explore natural wonders such as deep gorges, peaceful lakes, and caves that hold stories older than history itself. From the wine town of Melnik to the alpine beauty of Pirin National Park, every stop blends culture, nature, and living tradition.

But the heart of this journey lies in its encounters: sharing homemade meals with local families, learning about ancient rituals, and feeling the timeless calm of Bulgaria’s mountains and valleys. Whether you’re admiring Thracian sanctuaries, bathing in thermal waters, or hiking among pristine peaks, you’ll connect deeply with the spirit of the land.

This is more than a tour—it’s an immersion into Bulgaria’s soul. A chance to slow down, breathe deeply, and discover one of Europe’s last truly authentic travel experiences.

Itinerary – The Diversity of Southern Bulgaria

Day 1:Welcome to Sofia

In Sofia, you will welcomed by our tour guide/mountain guide and accompanied to your hotel.

Depending on your arrival time, we begin our journey through Bulgaria with a walk through Sofia – the third-oldest capital in Europe. Our captivating and informative private walking tour through the city center follows Sofia’s turbulent and colorful history. We go back to its Roman origins and discuss Bulgaria’s Ottoman heritage. We also focus extensively on more recent events and how they shaped Sofia’s modern appearance.

Day 2:Sofia – Rila Monastery – Melnik

In the morning, we leave Sofia and head toward the Rila Monastery – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a splendid example of Bulgarian Orthodox ecclesiastical art. First, however, we make a thematic stop to visit Boyana Church, also a UNESCO site, famous for its unique 12th-century frescoes.

After about 1.5 hours of driving, we reach the Rila Mountains. Today we have a short hike planned to the cave of St. John of Rila, the founder of Rila Monastery. There we will also find a mountain spring said to have healing powers, which has made this place a pilgrimage site.

No visit to Rila Monastery is complete without tasting fresh trout from the Rilska River – a regional tradition. We will enjoy lunch at a cozy nearby restaurant.

Afterward, we visit the monastery itself – the largest and oldest monastery in Bulgaria – and discuss the history of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and its role in preserving Bulgarian identity during Ottoman rule.

With both our spiritual and culinary needs satisfied, we head to Melnik – the smallest town in Bulgaria (approx. 2 hrs drive).

Hike: approx. 1.5 hrs, +100 m / -250 m

Day 3:Melnik – Rozhen Monastery – Heraclea Sintica

The day begins with a walk through Melnik and a visit to the famous Kordopulov House, whose stained-glass windows enchant from afar.

Next, we visit the small but beautiful Rozhen Monastery above Melnik (0.5 hr drive), where we will admire one of the most famous Bulgarian icons. From here we head out to the very top of the stunning Melnik Sand Pyramids landscape.

In the afternoon, we drive to one of the most significant recent archaeological discoveries from Roman times in Bulgaria – Heraclea Sintica (0.5 hr drive). It is located near Rupite – a warm mineral spring known for its healing properties and also included in today’s program, so please bring swimwear.

The day ends with homemade wine, a typical Bulgarian cheese and meat platter, and a gorgeous view of the town below.

Hike: approx. 0.5 hrs, +/-50 m

Day 4:Bansko – Dobarsko – Gorno Draglishte

Today we say goodbye to Melnik and drive to Bansko (1.5 hrs). Although mainly known for its ski slopes and winter tourism, Bansko has much more to offer. The Old Town is especially charming with its unique architecture from the 17th–19th centuries, and the culinary scene is not to be underestimated.

Early in the afternoon, we continue to Dobarsko (approx. 0.5 hrs), where we visit the local church and, if desired, take a pleasant hike with views of the Pirin Mountains.

In the evening, we are guests of Grandma Deshka, who will welcome us with homemade food and drinks, singing, and lots of humor.

Hike: approx. 2 hrs, +140 / -370 m

Day 5:Pirin Mountains

We spend today in the Pirin Mountains. After breakfast, we drive to the chairlift at Gotse Delchev Hut near Dobrinishte (approx. 40 min). The 30-minute lift ride starts at 1500 m and ends at 2250 m at the Bezbog Hut. From here, we hike to Popovo Lake (2250 m) in the heart of the Pirin. The trail is very pleasant with almost no elevation gain. Of course, we will enjoy a picnic by the lake in this breathtaking landscape.

In the afternoon, we will also have enough time for SPA and wellness in Dobrinishte, known for its hot thermal springs.

Hike: approx. 3–4 hrs, +/-150 m

Day 6:Gradishte Landscape Park – Yagodina

After a good night’s sleep and breakfast, we say goodbye to Grandma Deshka and head to the Rhodope Mountains.

Our first stop is the Gradishte Landscape Park (1.5 hrs). This place is best explored on a 1.5-hour hike, though even without hiking there is plenty to enjoy.

At noon, we reach Dospat Lake (approx. 40 min). We then continue toward Yagodina – a small village deep in the Rhodopes, best known for the Yagodina Cave. Naturally, we will also visit it. Warm clothing is necessary, as the cave remains at a constant 8°C year-round.

Hike: approx. 1–2 hrs, +/-100 m

Day 7:Yagodina – Trigrad

The Rhodopes are one of Bulgaria’s most impressive mountain ranges, known for soft hills, dense forests, and picturesque villages where ancient traditions are still alive. The region is famous for its majestic natural landscapes, including deep gorges, crystal-clear rivers, and mysterious caves such as the Devil’s Throat Cave, which we will visit today. The Rhodopes also host a unique flora and fauna with many rare plant and animal species.

Our hiking trail from Yagodina to Trigrad gives us a taste of this Rhodopean charm.

Hike: approx. 2 hrs, +200 / -150 m

Day 8:Devil’s Bridge – Kardzhali Lake

Our journey through the Rhodopes continues. We leave Yagodina in the morning and head east toward Kardzhali Lake (approx. 4 hrs).

To make the drive more pleasant, there are several stops along the way. The Rhodopes are considered the mystical heart of Bulgaria, as the legendary Thracian singer Orpheus is said to have lived here. One of the Thracian sanctuaries associated with the Orphic cult lies on our route – the Eagle Rocks near Ardino.

Another highlight today is the Devil’s Bridge over the Arda River – an impressive medieval structure known for its mystical atmosphere, perfectly built arches, and the legends surrounding its enigmatic name.

The day ends at Kardzhali Lake, where we will have dinner at a floating fish restaurant.

Day 9:Perperikon – Alexandrovo Tomb – Starosel

After breakfast by the picturesque Kardzhali Lake, we continue through the Eastern Rhodopes to one of Bulgaria’s most important archaeological sites – Perperikon (approx. 40 min). This impressive Thracian rock city, inhabited more than 8000 years ago, was once a major religious and political center. Here we explore the sanctuary ruins, the monumental throne, and the remains of an ancient acropolis.

We then visit the Thracian tomb of Alexandrovo, famous for its exceptionally well-preserved wall paintings (approx. 1 hr). The intricate frescoes offer fascinating insights into Thracian life and burial rituals.

In the late afternoon, we reach Starosel, where we will stay for the night (approx. 2 hrs).

Day 10:Starosel – Hisarya

Today we take it easy. If the Rosa Damascena is still blooming (May and June), early risers can visit the nearby rose garden, where everyone may pick their own roses.

After breakfast, we dive into the Thracian heritage of Starosel. Here we marvel at the largest Thracian temple-mausoleum in Bulgaria and immerse ourselves in the mystical world of this ancient civilization.

In the afternoon we take a short trip to Hisarya – a charming spa town known for its healing mineral springs and impressive Roman ruins, including the well-preserved fortress wall, Roman baths, and the southern city gate, considered one of the finest examples of Roman architecture in Bulgaria.

Day 11:Back to Sofia

Every journey must come to an end. Today we say farewell to Southern Bulgaria and return to Sofia (approx. 2 hrs).

Departure from Sofia Airport or extension of your stay in Bulgaria with extra night/s in Sofia.
